Hampshire College Launches Scholarship For Undocumented Immigrants Hampshire College in Massachusetts has announced it will provide funding for undocumented students accepted into the school, according to the Boston Globe. The small private liberal arts college so far has $300,000 in donations for the new scholarship, which provides upwards of $25,000 in financial aid per year. In many states, including Massachusetts, undocumented immigrants can attend college but must pay out-of-state rates for tuition. Undocumented immigrants are not allowed to receive federal financial aid. Only California, New Mexico and Texas provide state financial aid to undocumented students. “Many of us who went to college in the post-World War II boom went on full scholarships. All financial aid was need-based. Increasingly that’s not true anymore,” said sociology professor Margaret Cerullo, who advocated for the creation of the scholarship. “For a lot of us, access to higher education is a deep principle.” The current $300,000 in donations can support one student every four years. Hampshire College, which the Princeton Review rated the 5th most politically-active school in the U.S., hopes raise even more money. “We raised money from alums, prior donors, parents, and the graduating class. We asked students to dedicate their graduate gift to the undocumented student fund. We tried to raise money on every front we could,” said Cerullo. “We wanted funding not for one year, but ongoing to ensure access for undocumented students.”
