Short rant for my followers in Harlem
Anyone who has lived, chilled or worked in Harlem and Spanish Harlem knows of the oppression and fear the NYPD inflicts upon our neighborhood. Being frisked by police has become a right of passage in the hood. It’s common to hear about a friend spending a night in bookings for possessing a fucking dime of weed.
Black and latino’s have to develop a sixth sense to survive. We know to stay away from white people in sports jerseys (cops) and look out for DT’s in tinted cars (and even taxi cabs). We know which train station we can hop on and what streets/aves to avoid. Paranoia is survival.
The sad part is that we have grown accustomed to the unnecessarily large police presence in Harlem. You literally cannot walk down a block without seeing a NYPD car/van passing (I wish I was exaggerating). Nothing is done about the blatant police corruption and racial profiling. It has become the norm.
Why not fight it? At least for a night. What do we have to lose?
