Family And Community Protest In Memory of Ramarley Graham
On the first anniversary of Ramarley Graham’s death, about 200 relatives and community members gathered outside his Bronx home — where he was fatally shot by the NYPD in front of his 6 year old brother and grandmother— to rally against police brutality of young minorities.
“We want people to remember what happened to Ramarley and hope another family doesn’t feel the pain we’re feeling,” said Graham’s mother, Constance Malcolm. “It’s a pain I hope no other parent will have to go through.”
The 200+ protesters marched to the 47th precinct to demand the officers involved in the death of Ramarley be held accountable. Richard Haste, the NYPD officer who fired the shot, was charged with manslaughter. It was the first time since 2006 that a NYPD officer has faced criminal charges in a fatal shooting.

![1st Memorial For Ramarley Graham
On February 2nd, 2012, two NYPD officers shot and killed Ramarley Graham, an unarmed Bronx 18 year old, in his bathroom in front of his 6 year old brother and grandmother after barging into his home without a warrant when they suspected he has marijuana on him.
The landlady, Paulet Minzie, 55, ran out the shower with only a towel after hearing the gunshots. Officers then put a gun to her head and told her to put her hands up. It wasn’t until she told them that there were cameras surveilling them, that they put their guns down.
Court papers say “[He\] immediately lowered his weapon. His demeanor completely changed, and he alerted his colleague that they may be on camera,”. The footage later revealed that Graham walked calmly to his apartment followed by police (without a warrant), contradicting the officers original claim that the teenager was running away. One year later, Richard Haste, the NYPD officer who fired the shot, remains a free man.
On February 2nd, the anniversary of Ramarley’s death, his family will be holding a rally, candlelight vigil and march. RSVP to the event on Facebook.
